President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to work closely with the police and other security agencies to tackle insecurity across the country.
Speaking at the 2026 National Police Day Grand Parade in Abuja, the President said national security cannot be achieved by law enforcement agencies alone, stressing that citizens, community leaders, traditional institutions, religious leaders, civil society groups, and the private sector all have important roles to play.
He warned that mistrust between the public and law enforcement would only worsen insecurity, noting that the police must remain connected to the people, attentive to their concerns, respectful of their dignity, and responsive to their needs.
He also urged Nigerians to see the police not as a distant force, but as partners in the shared responsibility of preserving peace and public safety.
The President further charged the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to remain committed to ongoing reforms and uphold the highest standards of integrity, discipline, and professionalism.
He said strengthening policing institutions remains essential to national stability and expressed confidence that the country would overcome its security challenges through sustained reforms and commitment to duty.
Also speaking at the event, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, said the force must rise above indiscipline and misconduct, stressing that accountability would be enforced without exception.
He made it clear that rank, uniform, or authority would not shield any officer from consequences for wrongdoing, insisting that there would be no sacred cows under his leadership.
The Inspector-General also assured officers that the leadership would continue to support those who uphold professionalism, while promising improvements in welfare, training, and operational capacity.
National Police Day, observed annually on April 7, is set aside to honour the service, sacrifice, and dedication of police officers, including those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
