Panic gripped the Ekiti State University (EKSU) community late Monday night after armed men reportedly attacked students’ hostels in Ado-Ekiti, forcing many residents to flee for safety.

According to accounts from students and residents in the area, the attackers stormed several off-campus hostels around the university community, moving from one building to another while robbing occupants of their valuables. Items reportedly stolen during the raid included mobile phones, laptops, cash, and other personal belongings.

The incident, which reportedly occurred in the Phase 2 axis of the university environment, triggered fear and confusion among students, many of whom were said to be preparing for their examinations at the time of the attack. Several students were thrown into panic as they sought refuge and contacted friends, relatives, and authorities for help.

One of the students who raised alarm online described the situation as deeply troubling, alleging that such attacks have become increasingly frequent in the area. According to the student, the hostel invasions and robberies have persisted for several days, heightening anxiety among members of the university community.

The development has once again brought attention to growing concerns over the safety of students living in private hostels outside the main campus. Many students depend on off-campus accommodation due to limited hostel space within the institution, making them vulnerable to criminal activities in surrounding neighbourhoods.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Ekiti State Police Command, Abutu Sunday, said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the attack. He added that the suspect is currently undergoing investigation and assured that security agencies have begun taking steps to prevent a recurrence.

According to the police, necessary security measures are being put in place to strengthen surveillance and improve safety around the affected areas.

In the aftermath of the attack, students have called on the Ekiti State Government, university authorities, and security agencies to urgently address the recurring security threat around the institution. They appealed for intensified patrols, stronger law enforcement presence, and better protection for students residing in off-campus hostels.

The incident has left many students shaken, with growing calls for immediate intervention to restore confidence and ensure that academic activities can continue without fear or disruption.
