The Benue State Government has declared a one-week Easter holiday for public and civil servants across the state.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary (General Services), Godwin Tyolumun Tighil, on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government, Deborah Aber.
According to the statement, workers are to begin the holiday from Tuesday, March 31, 2026, and are expected to resume work on Wednesday, April 8, 2026.
The state government explained that the decision was approved by Governor Hyacinth Alia, who also directed that public servants should close work by 1 p.m. on Tuesday to commence the Easter break.
However, the government clarified that workers involved in essential services are expected to remain at their duty posts to ensure that urgent matters affecting public welfare and public services are not disrupted during the holiday period.
Governor Alia also used the opportunity to extend Easter greetings to the people of Benue State, urging residents to reflect on the significance of the season and to use the period to pray for peace, unity, and stability in the state and across Nigeria.
The Easter break is expected to provide workers with time to observe the Christian celebration with their families and loved ones, while also allowing for spiritual reflection and rest.
The development marks another holiday gesture by the state government, following previous festive breaks granted to workers during major celebrations.
Easter is one of the most important celebrations in the Christian faith, commemorating the resurrection of Jesus Christ three days after His crucifixion. For Christians, the season represents hope, victory over death, renewal, and the promise of eternal life.
The celebration is observed annually between March and April, with the exact date changing each year because it is determined by the lunar calendar.
