Adebayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power, has officially resigned from his cabinet position to concentrate on his 2027 bid for the governorship of Oyo State.
In a formal correspondence sent to President Bola Tinubu on March 26, Adelabu explained that stepping away from his ministerial duties would provide him the necessary time and resources to pursue his political ambitions in his home state.
Deadline Compliance: The resignation aligns with a federal mandate requiring all political appointees with electoral aspirations for 2027 to vacate their posts by March 31, per the Electoral Act.
Political History: This marks Adelabu’s third attempt at the seat. The former CBN Deputy Governor previously ran as the APC candidate in 2019 and under the Accord Party banner in 2023.
Current Context: His exit occurs during a period of transition for the power sector, which has struggled with inconsistent national supply despite ongoing efforts by the ministry to stabilize generation and distribution.
Adelabu’s departure is expected to be the first of many as federal officials begin shifting their focus toward the next general election cycle. As of now, the Presidency has not named a successor to lead the Ministry of Power.
