The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has formally recognised the faction of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, backed by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in a development that marks a major turn in the party’s leadership crisis.
INEC updated the PDP leadership on its official website, listing Abdulrahman Mohammed as the party’s National Chairman.
Mohammed emerged alongside other members of the National Working Committee during a national convention held on Sunday at the velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
The latest development comes as internal divisions continue to deepen within the PDP, which has remained split into two rival factions.
One of the factions, led by Kabiru Turaki, had approached the Supreme Court in a bid to stop the Wike-backed group from holding the convention.
Despite the legal challenge, the convention went ahead and produced a full list of new national officers.
Speaking at the event, Wike said the PDP had finally overcome a prolonged leadership crisis that once threatened the survival of the party.
He said committed party members were responsible for reclaiming the party’s structure and restoring internal democracy.
According to him, party loyalists stood against forces trying to promote ethnic and regional divisions within the PDP.
Wike said the party had now been returned to what he described as its rightful owners — the people.
He also praised grassroots supporters for keeping the party alive during difficult periods, saying that despite the actions of what he called opportunistic elites, ordinary members remained loyal and steadfast.
