Eight persons lost their lives on Monday after suspected terrorists detonated an improvised explosive device along Luma Road in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The attackers also reportedly blew up a bridge linking the Luma, Babana and Agwara communities, a major route used by residents and traders heading to the popular Monday market at Babana. The destruction of the bridge caused severe disruption to movement in the area and left many residents stranded.
The attack happened in the early hours of Monday, throwing surrounding communities into panic as multiple explosions were heard across parts of the local government area. Residents were said to have fled their homes for safety following the incident.
In addition to the deadly explosion on Luma Road, explosive devices were allegedly detonated in other locations within the area, worsening fear and confusion among villagers. The coordinated nature of the attack has raised fresh concerns over insecurity in parts of Niger State, especially communities that depend heavily on rural roads and local markets for their daily livelihood.
Local authorities confirmed that an attack took place and that critical infrastructure, including a bridge, was damaged. Efforts were said to be ongoing to assess the full extent of the destruction and verify details from the affected communities.
The damage to the bridge is expected to affect transportation, trade and communication between several communities in the area. For many villagers, the route serves as an important link for commerce, access to neighbouring settlements and attendance at the weekly border market, making the incident a major setback for economic activities.
The latest attack has further heightened tension among residents, many of whom now fear renewed assaults and worsening insecurity. Community members are calling for urgent intervention to restore safety, repair damaged infrastructure and prevent further attacks.
Security concerns have continued to trouble several parts of Niger State, with rural communities often bearing the brunt of violent attacks. Monday’s incident adds to growing worries over the use of explosives by armed groups and the increasing threat posed to both lives and public infrastructure.
Authorities are expected to provide more updates as assessments continue and as officials work to determine the full scale of casualties, damage and displacement caused by the attack.
