Trump weighs soldiers’ deployment as US-Iran conflict escalates.

The administration of Donald Trump is considering the deployment of thousands of American troops as part of a potential escalation in its military campaign against Iran.

The proposed move is aimed at securing safe passage for oil tankers through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, with operations expected to rely heavily on air and naval forces.

Iranian naval assets, including warships and submarines, have reportedly been key targets in ongoing US military actions. However, expanding efforts to secure the shipping route could involve deploying troops along Iran’s coastline and possibly to Kharg Island, which handles a significant portion of the country’s oil exports.

Officials have raised concerns about the risks associated with such a deployment, particularly due to Iran’s ability to launch missile and drone attacks on exposed positions. One official described the potential operation as highly dangerous, citing the vulnerability of forces in the area.

Since the conflict began on February 28, at least 13 US troops have been killed, with about 200 others reported injured. Discussions within the administration have also included the possibility of securing Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium.

Trump has indicated that the broader objectives of the United States include maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and preventing Iran from developing nuclear weapons.

Despite the potential escalation, support from US allies for deeper involvement remains limited. At the same time, opinion polls indicate growing domestic opposition, with a majority of Americans expressing concern over continued military action against Iran.
