The Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Kayode Opeifa, has announced the full restoration of train services along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor after a temporary disruption earlier in the week.
In his statement, Opeifa reassured passengers that normal operations have resumed across the route, emphasizing that swift action by the corporation ensured that services were restored without prolonged delays. He noted that the incident, which occurred on Monday, prompted an immediate response from technical and operational teams, leading to a rapid resolution and the strengthening of safety protocols.
According to him, passengers can now book and travel with renewed confidence, as additional safety and operational measures have been put in place to enhance the overall travel experience. He stressed that the corporation remains committed to maintaining high standards in both service delivery and passenger protection, adding that the latest improvements are designed to prevent a recurrence of such disruptions.
The NRC boss also highlighted the successful resumption of return trips from Rigasa in Kaduna State, describing it as a clear indication that stability has been restored along the busy rail line. He commended the cooperation of local authorities and community leaders, whose support contributed to the smooth recovery of operations and the reassurance of passengers.
Providing details about the earlier disruption, the corporation explained that the incident took place during a routine journey along the corridor. A train travelling from Kaduna toward Abuja encountered a technical issue shortly after departing one of its scheduled stops. During the journey, an attached locomotive became disengaged while the train was in motion. The detached component moved forward and made contact with the rear section of the train, creating a serious operational situation that required immediate intervention.
Despite the alarming nature of the occurrence, the situation was quickly brought under control by onboard personnel and response teams. The train was carrying hundreds of passengers at the time, along with crew members and security officials. While there were no fatalities recorded, some passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries and were promptly attended to, receiving medical care before the journey continued safely to its final destination in Abuja.
The corporation emphasized that the safety of passengers remains its top priority, noting that every incident is treated with the utmost seriousness. Following the disruption, a thorough assessment was conducted to identify the cause and implement corrective measures. This, according to the NRC, has led to the introduction of stricter monitoring systems, improved equipment checks, and enhanced coordination among operational staff.
Opeifa reiterated that the quick restoration of services reflects the resilience and responsiveness of the railway system. He assured the public that lessons learned from the incident would be used to further strengthen the network and improve reliability across all routes.
With train services now running smoothly again, commuters along the Abuja–Kaduna corridor can expect safer, more efficient, and uninterrupted journeys, as the corporation continues to prioritize modernization and operational excellence within Nigeria’s rail transport system.
