The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated its commitment to protecting the rights and privacy of citizens in the digital space through strengthened cybersecurity policies and regulations.
An official of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Dr. Ayodele Bakare, said the government had developed several policy and regulatory frameworks aimed at improving cybersecurity and safeguarding digital communications across the country.
According to him, cybersecurity governance in Nigeria is implemented through collaboration among multiple government institutions, each responsible for different aspects of the national cybersecurity framework.
He explained that the Office of the National Security Adviser coordinates national cybersecurity efforts through the National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre, which serves as the operational arm overseeing the country’s cybersecurity activities.
Bakare noted that one of the key instruments guiding Nigeria’s cybersecurity efforts is the National Cybersecurity Policy and Strategy. He also highlighted the legal framework provided by the Cybercrimes (Prohibition and Prevention) Act 2015, which was amended in 2024 to strengthen the country’s response to cyber threats and digital crimes.
He added that NITDA has introduced several sector-specific regulations to enhance cybersecurity, including the National Public Key Infrastructure Regulation, designed to ensure trust and security in digital communications and transactions.
Bakare further explained that the agency previously played a key role in establishing Nigeria’s data protection framework through the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation 2019, which later evolved into a broader legal structure now implemented by the Nigeria Data Protection Commission.
He also disclosed that the agency is finalising an Information Security Regulation that will soon provide organisations and individuals with clear guidelines on safeguarding information and digital assets.
According to him, Nigeria has continued to strengthen its cybersecurity laws and policies, a progress reflected in the country’s performance in the Global Cybersecurity Index, particularly in the area of legal measures that assess the existence and effectiveness of national cybersecurity laws and regulations.
He emphasised that sustained collaboration among government agencies and stakeholders would remain crucial in implementing existing policies and improving the country’s digital security framework.
