The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, has ordered a thorough investigation into allegations of unprofessional conduct by officers of the Jobele Division in Afijio Local Government Area. The inquiry follows protests on Tuesday by residents over rising cases of kidnapping and insecurity.
According to a statement from the state Police Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Ayanlade, the Assistant Superintendent of Police who led the patrol team and the Divisional Police Officer have been issued queries, while an Inspector involved has been detained pending the investigation’s outcome.
The protests erupted after residents accused the police of releasing a suspect, apprehended by the community while allegedly armed with a gun and cutlass, without explanation. Residents said the suspect was handed over to the police for proper investigation but was released without their knowledge, prompting the road blockade on the Old Oyo–Ibadan highway.
Community members reported that Afijio, particularly Jobele, has experienced at least seven kidnapping cases recently. One victim of a recent attack had to have a hand amputated due to severe injuries. Residents vowed to maintain vigilance until security agencies guarantee their safety.
The Oyo State Police command confirmed the investigation is ongoing in line with established regulations to ensure appropriate disciplinary action where necessary.
