The Lagos State House of Assembly has recommended relocating residents of the Makoko, Oko-Agbon, and Sogunro waterfront communities to Agbowa in Epe Local Government Area.

The proposal followed the adoption of a report by the Assembly’s Standing Committee on Rules and Business, which investigated the demolition of structures in the affected areas.

In December 2025, the Lagos State Government began demolishing what it described as illegal structures near the Third Mainland Bridge, displacing many residents. The demolitions prompted protests and a petition to the Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa, calling for legislative intervention.

Presenting the committee’s findings, Chairman Noheem Adams said the panel held multiple meetings with residents and visited the communities alongside relevant government officials. The report noted that the demolitions destroyed homes and property, leaving many residents displaced, and worsened living conditions in settlements that have relied on fishing for decades.

The committee recommended that the state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, direct the Special Adviser on E-GIS to verify the enumeration report submitted by the communities. It also proposed relocating affected residents to a low-cost housing estate in Agbowa, Epe, where they could continue their fishing activities.

Additionally, the committee urged the government to involve the Oloto of the Otto family in developing the planned water city project and recognise them as the original landowners. The state had previously announced a $10 million investment in the water city project, aimed at modernising the waterfront communities.
