The Ogun State Police Command has ordered an investigation into an incident involving officers from the Kemta Police Station in Abeokuta and an operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The command said the case had been referred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a thorough probe.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed that the command was aware of the incident and would work with the civil defence corps to determine what transpired.
He said the investigation would examine the circumstances surrounding the incident to ensure due process and apply sanctions where necessary.
According to him, the command will collaborate with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to thoroughly review the situation and take appropriate action to prevent a recurrence.
The police also reassured residents that security agencies operating in the state maintain cordial and collaborative working relationships in the interest of public safety.
The incident reportedly occurred at Government Technical College in Abeokuta, where officers attached to Kemta Police Station were accused of assaulting a civil defence officer and firing tear gas within the school premises.
Eyewitnesses alleged that the situation began after a man operating a nearby carwash, who had earlier been accused of injuring a student, was released despite a complaint.
Tension reportedly escalated when some students confronted the suspect, prompting police intervention.
Witnesses further alleged that the Divisional Police Officer ordered the arrest of some students and that a civil defence officer who attempted to intervene was attacked.
Several tear gas canisters were also reportedly discharged within the school premises, causing panic among students and teachers.
Some phones belonging to teachers and the civil defence officer were also allegedly seized during the incident.
The development has generated reactions on social media, with calls for a comprehensive investigation into the conduct of the officers involved.
