A major accident involving two heavy-duty trucks occurred near the Arepo Bridge on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway early Sunday morning, leaving two people injured and causing significant travel delays.

Details of the Incident

The crash took place around 4:00 AM and involved a Seaco truck and an unladen American Cola vehicle. Following the collision, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) arrived at the scene to begin the recovery process, though the wreckage caused a substantial traffic jam on the busy outbound route from Lagos.

One of the drivers involved was reportedly rushed to a nearby hospital with a severe leg fracture, while the second driver sustained only minor abrasional injuries.

Cause of the Crash: Hazardous Road Conditions

Witnesses and involved parties have pointed to hazardous waste materials left on the pavement as the primary cause of the accident.

  • Slippery Debris: A slick, factory-like substance was observed on the road surface between the Arepo and Magboro sections.

  • Loss of Control: Yakubu Musa, the driver of the American Cola truck, explained that his vehicle began to fishtail after hitting the slippery patch. Despite his attempts to regain steering, the truck eventually struck the median divider.

  • Widespread Impact: Musa noted that several other motorists experienced near-misses or minor damage, such as broken lights and windshields, due to the slick conditions.

Response and Recovery

Local residents and fellow motorists, including bystander John Emmanuel, expressed frustration over the environmental hazard, calling for the arrest of whoever dumped the waste on a public highway.

While a police officer on-site declined to provide an official statement pending a briefing from superiors, the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) later arrived to manage the flow of vehicles and alleviate the gridlock.
