Suspected members of the Lakurawa armed group attacked a police checkpoint in the early hours of Thursday at Bakinruwa/Maje in Bagudo Local Government Area of Kebbi State, killing two police officers on duty.

Residents said the gunmen stormed the checkpoint in large numbers during the early hours of the morning while the officers were carrying out routine security duties. The attackers reportedly overpowered the policemen before setting fire to the tent used by the officers at the checkpoint.

A resident of the community, who requested anonymity due to security concerns, said the incident caused panic among people living in the area.

According to the resident, the officers attempted to resist the attackers but were outnumbered.

“The gunmen came in large numbers and attacked the checkpoint. The policemen tried to resist them but were overpowered. After killing the officers, they set the tent at the checkpoint on fire before leaving the area,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force in Kebbi State, Bashir Usman, said two police officers lost their lives during the attack.

He stated that security operatives have taken steps to restore calm in the area and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“Yes, there was an attack at the Bakinruwa/Maje checkpoint in Bagudo Local Government Area. They killed two of our officers and burnt down the checkpoint, but the police are on top of the situation. Further details will be communicated,” he said.

The Bakinruwa–Maje corridor, located near the border communities of the state, has experienced repeated security challenges in recent months, raising concerns among residents.

Security agencies have since intensified surveillance and patrols in the area as part of efforts to prevent further attacks and track down those responsible for the latest incident.
