A cargo-laden trailer erupted in flames early Thursday morning at the Berger New Garage axis of the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, triggering heavy traffic congestion along the inward Lagos corridor and disrupting the early morning commute for thousands of motorists.

The incident occurred at about 5:50 a.m. when the container attached to the trailer suddenly caught fire while moving along the highway. At the time the fire started, the exact contents of the container had not yet been identified, raising concerns among motorists and emergency responders about the potential risk posed by the burning cargo.

Thick smoke quickly billowed from the vehicle, drawing the attention of road users and residents in the area. Within minutes, the flames intensified, spreading across the container and forcing nearby drivers to slow down or abandon their lanes to avoid the burning truck. The situation created panic among commuters who were already navigating the usually busy morning traffic on one of Nigeria’s most important highways.

The fire also caused a major disruption to vehicular movement along the inward Lagos section of the road, with traffic building up rapidly as motorists struggled to navigate around the affected section. Long queues of vehicles soon formed, stretching several kilometres backward and affecting commuters heading toward the city for work and other daily activities.

Emergency response teams were quickly dispatched to the scene to contain the situation. Officials from the Lagos State Transport Management Authority arrived promptly to coordinate traffic control and redirect vehicles away from the affected area, while firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further.

Traffic management officers were seen directing vehicles to alternative lanes while simultaneously ensuring that curious onlookers and other road users kept a safe distance from the burning truck. Their efforts were aimed at reducing the gridlock and preventing additional accidents that could arise from the chaotic situation.

Authorities later confirmed that the traffic backlog extended far beyond the Opic axis along the expressway, leaving many commuters stranded in slow-moving or stationary traffic for extended periods. Motorists traveling toward central Lagos from neighbouring areas experienced significant delays as the congestion worsened during the peak morning rush hour.

Officials at the scene focused on both extinguishing the fire and ensuring that the damaged vehicle could eventually be removed from the road to restore normal traffic flow. Firefighters deployed hoses and other firefighting equipment to bring the flames under control while carefully assessing the stability of the container and trailer.

Although the blaze caused significant disruption, emergency responders worked swiftly to manage the incident and prevent it from escalating into a larger disaster. Their prompt intervention helped contain the fire and limit potential damage to nearby vehicles or surrounding infrastructure.

The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway remains one of the busiest highways in the country, serving as a major link between Lagos and several other states in the southwestern region. Because of its strategic importance, any incident along the route—especially one involving a burning heavy-duty vehicle—can quickly lead to widespread traffic congestion.

Authorities continue to urge drivers to exercise caution while traveling along major highways and to maintain safe distances from heavy-duty trucks carrying cargo. Such precautions are particularly important when transporting goods whose contents may pose safety risks if accidents occur.

As emergency teams continued their operations at the scene, commuters were advised to remain patient and cooperate with traffic officials directing vehicles around the affected area. The situation also highlighted the importance of rapid emergency response and effective traffic management in minimizing the impact of road incidents on one of the nation’s most critical transportation corridors.
