President Bola Tinubu has called on the Senate to initiate constitutional amendments that would allow for the establishment of state police across Nigeria.
The President made the appeal on Wednesday evening during an interfaith breaking of fast (Iftar) with senators at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Tinubu said his administration is grappling with security challenges including terrorism, banditry and insurgency, stressing that the creation of state police could strengthen efforts to secure the country.
According to him, incorporating state police into the Constitution would help authorities reclaim forests from criminal elements and restore safety in communities.
The President also commended the National Assembly for supporting his administration’s reform agenda. He said recent policy decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidy and reforms in the foreign exchange system, were aimed at tackling corruption and stabilising the economy.
Tinubu expressed optimism about Nigeria’s economic outlook, noting that ongoing reforms are laying the foundation for long-term prosperity.
