The Presidency has confirmed the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police, bringing an end to his tenure as the nation’s top law enforcement officer.

According to the Presidency, Egbetokun submitted his resignation letter, citing family matters that require his full and undivided attention. His decision marks a significant development within the country’s security leadership at a time when concerns over national safety remain at the forefront of public discourse.

Egbetokun, who was appointed Inspector-General of Police on June 19, 2023, served during a challenging period marked by complex security threats across various parts of the country. His tenure saw efforts aimed at strengthening internal policing structures, enhancing intelligence gathering, and improving collaboration among security agencies. Despite these initiatives, the security landscape remained demanding, with law enforcement authorities grappling with evolving criminal activities and persistent threats in several regions.

On Monday evening, Egbetokun was seen arriving at the Presidential Villa in Abuja in his official vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser bearing the number plate NPF-01. Dressed in his black police uniform, though without his cap, he briefly stepped out of the vehicle and requested his notepad from an aide before proceeding inside. His arrival coincided with that of several governors who were present for an interfaith breaking of fast engagement with President Bola Tinubu, initially creating uncertainty about the nature of his visit.

Later developments confirmed that the meeting at the Presidential Villa was directly related to his position as Inspector-General. His presence at the Villa was not described as routine, underscoring the significance of the engagement. After the meeting, security procedures at the State House were observed as his vehicle underwent standard checks upon departure.

Egbetokun’s resignation comes amid heightened national conversations about the need for stronger and more innovative security frameworks to address ongoing challenges. In recent months, issues such as kidnappings, banditry, and violent attacks in different parts of the country have drawn widespread concern from citizens and stakeholders alike. The administration has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to tackling insecurity through structural reforms and enhanced cooperation between federal and state authorities.

President Bola Tinubu has reiterated that security remains central to national development, describing it as the foundation upon which economic growth and social stability are built. Discussions around key reforms, including the establishment of state police, have continued to gain prominence as part of broader strategies aimed at addressing security concerns more effectively.

With Egbetokun’s departure, attention now turns to the process of appointing a new Inspector-General of Police who will be tasked with leading the Nigeria Police Force through a critical phase. The incoming leadership is expected to build upon existing reforms while introducing renewed strategies to restore public confidence and strengthen the nation’s security architecture.

Egbetokun’s tenure will be remembered as one defined by significant operational challenges and ongoing debates about the future direction of policing in Nigeria. His resignation signals a transition moment for the country’s law enforcement system as authorities move to chart the next course in addressing the security needs of the nation.
