Three individuals have been arraigned before the Ejioku Magistrate Court in Ibadan over their alleged involvement in the assault of firefighters during an emergency response in the city.
The suspects were brought before the court on Monday and charged with conspiracy and conduct likely to breach public peace. The case was presided over by Magistrate Marcus Omolara.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred in the Oki area of Ibadan, where firefighters were reportedly attacked while carrying out their official duties. The firefighters were said to have been responding to an emergency situation when a group of hoodlums allegedly confronted and assaulted them, disrupting their efforts.
Following the incident, security operatives launched an investigation which led to the arrest of three suspects believed to have been involved in the attack. The arrests were made on Tuesday, and the suspects were subsequently charged to court.
During their arraignment, the accused persons were presented with the charges against them. The court ordered that they be remanded at the Agodi Correctional Centre pending further proceedings.
The case has been adjourned until March 12, 2026, when the court is expected to continue hearing the matter.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of emergency responders, particularly firefighters who risk their lives to protect lives and property. Authorities have reiterated the importance of respecting and supporting emergency personnel as they carry out their responsibilities, warning that any form of obstruction or assault against them is a serious offence punishable under the law.
Residents and stakeholders have also called for stronger measures to ensure the protection of emergency workers, emphasizing the need for public cooperation during rescue and firefighting operations.
