The Christian Association of Nigeria has called for inclusive governance, effective policy implementation, and national unity as Christians observe Ash Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, CAN President Daniel Okoh said the period offers an opportunity for reflection on the country’s condition and the responsibilities of both leaders and citizens in shaping the future of Nigeria.

The association noted that the nation is currently facing significant social and economic challenges, including rising living costs, unemployment, and persistent security concerns affecting communities. It stressed that these issues require practical action, responsible leadership, and a shared commitment to lasting solutions.

CAN urged leaders at all levels to move beyond policy formulation and focus on effective implementation that delivers tangible benefits to citizens. It emphasized that while many policies exist, the key challenge lies in ensuring they are executed fairly, transparently, and in ways that bring real relief to households and communities.

The association also highlighted the importance of inclusiveness in governance, calling on leaders to ensure that government programmes reach all segments of society, particularly young people and vulnerable communities.

CAN further advised citizens to reject division, violence, and misinformation, stressing the need for unity despite differences in faith, ethnicity, and culture. It encouraged cooperation among religious groups and responsible civic conduct to promote peace and national stability.

The association also appealed to young people to channel their energy into innovation, productive engagement, and active participation in nation-building, emphasizing that national progress depends on the collective efforts of both leaders and citizens.
