Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union and the 30th AU General Assembly held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice President participated in the summit held from February 14 to 15, 2026.

The summit, themed “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” focused on strengthening Africa’s commitment to sustainable water management, improved sanitation systems, and advancing the development objectives outlined in the AU’s Agenda 2063.

During the event, Shettima participated in high-level meetings with African leaders and held bilateral engagements with political and business stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic, economic, and strategic partnerships across the continent.

The statement also disclosed that the Vice President secured the goodwill of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who encouraged Nigeria to play a leading role in Africa’s push for a restructured global order, noting the country’s strategic position on the continent.

At a high-level side event on building Africa’s health security sovereignty, Shettima called for a shift towards self-reliant healthcare systems across the continent. He stressed the importance of reducing dependence on foreign aid and strengthening domestic health capacity to ensure reliable and sustainable healthcare for African populations.

He emphasised that Africa must develop resilient and homegrown health systems capable of responding effectively to public health challenges without relying on uncertain global supply chains.
