The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially issued a notice for Nigeria’s 2027 general election, setting February 20, 2027, for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, while the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections will take place on March 6, 2027.

INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, disclosed the election timetable during a press conference held in Abuja, stating that the early announcement was part of the commission’s commitment to transparency, adequate preparation, and credible electoral conduct.

According to him, the early release of the election timetable and schedule of activities is intended to give political parties, candidates, security agencies, and other stakeholders sufficient time to prepare for the electoral process. He noted that the commission had carefully developed the timetable after extensive internal planning and consultations.

Amupitan explained that the notice marks the formal commencement of the electoral cycle, in line with constitutional provisions and the commission’s mandate to organise, undertake, and supervise elections. He added that the commission remains focused on ensuring that all necessary preparations, including voter registration updates, logistics planning, staff training, and stakeholder engagement, are carried out efficiently.

The INEC chairman also acknowledged that the ongoing review of the Electoral Act by the National Assembly could influence certain aspects of the electoral process. He noted that while the commission has already made submissions and recommendations to lawmakers, adjustments may be made to specific activities depending on the timing and outcome of the legislative amendments.

He reassured Nigerians that the commission would continue to monitor developments closely and make any necessary adjustments to ensure compliance with the law while maintaining the integrity and credibility of the electoral process.

INEC emphasized that the early announcement of election dates would help reduce uncertainty among voters and political actors, while also improving coordination with security agencies, election observers, and civil society organisations. The commission noted that early planning is critical to addressing logistical challenges and ensuring smooth conduct of elections across the country.

The commission also reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening electoral transparency, promoting voter confidence, and ensuring that the 2027 general election reflects the will of the people.

INEC further highlighted that the long-term election calendar framework introduced under former chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, was designed to institutionalise predictability in Nigeria’s electoral system. The framework allows stakeholders to plan ahead and supports efforts to improve election management, reduce last-minute challenges, and enhance overall efficiency.

The commission assured Nigerians of its readiness to conduct free, fair, and credible elections, while urging political parties, candidates, and voters to comply with electoral guidelines and contribute to a peaceful democratic process.
