The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has approved the immediate deployment of a special intervention battalion to Plateau State to tackle the resurgence of terrorist attacks and violent killings in the region.
The deployment, involving the Chief of Army Staff Intervention Battalion made up of special forces, is aimed at aggressively confronting criminal elements and restoring peace.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Media Information Officer of Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, Captain Chinonso Oteh, and published on the Nigerian Army’s official X handle on Tuesday.
According to the statement, the troops have already arrived in Plateau State and were received at the Headquarters of 3 Division of the Nigerian Army.
The General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Joint Task Force Operation Enduring Peace, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, represented by Brigadier General Senlong Sule, welcomed the troops and charged them to act decisively.
He urged the soldiers to be firm and uncompromising in carrying out offensive operations against terrorist groups responsible for the recent attacks.
The Army described the deployment as a strategic and decisive move that could significantly improve security and curb violent attacks in Plateau and surrounding areas.
The intervention comes amid renewed violence in Plateau State and other parts of Nigeria’s north-central region.
On February 7, at least four people, including a woman, were reportedly killed by suspected militia in Ding’ak village, Mushere district of Bokkos Local Government Area. The attack reportedly occurred a day after rumours circulated warning of possible violence.
Major General Oyinlola appealed to residents not to panic over the increased movement of troops and military equipment, assuring that the deployment is aimed solely at restoring peace and protecting lives and property.
He also urged members of the public to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could help identify and apprehend those behind the attacks.
The Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating terrorist threats and ensuring lasting security in Plateau State and across the country.
