The Federal Government has announced a six-week partial closure of sections of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to enable urgent repairs on expansion joints at Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge, and Arepo–Punch Bridge.

The Federal Ministry of Works said the closure was necessary to resume critical rehabilitation works on the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge, which had earlier been suspended following complaints by motorists over severe traffic congestion.

Speaking during an inspection at Kara Bridge, the Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, apologised for the inconvenience and assured road users that improved traffic management measures would be put in place to minimise disruptions.

He explained that the damaged expansion joints on the affected bridges posed serious safety risks and had contributed to several accidents. He added that the Minister of Works, David Umahi, had directed that urgent repairs be carried out to prevent further incidents.

The contractor handling the project, CBC Construction Company, said repair works on the Lagos-bound sections of Magboro and Arepo–Punch bridges had been completed, with attention now shifting to the Ibadan-bound lanes.

According to the company’s General Manager, Andy Duan, half of the Lagos-bound section of Kara Bridge has already been repaired, while work will continue on the remaining portion. He noted that the expansion joints on Kara Bridge were in poor condition and had become a major safety concern.

Duan said construction equipment would be mobilised immediately, with full repair work scheduled to begin shortly. He explained that the project would be executed in phases, with half of each expansion joint expected to be completed within one week.

He also assured motorists that safety measures, including the installation of barriers, warning signs, and lights, would be put in place to protect both road users and construction workers.

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps urged motorists to remain patient and comply with traffic regulations throughout the repair period. The agency warned against traffic violations, including driving against traffic, stressing that offenders would be sanctioned.

Authorities said the repairs were necessary to address deteriorating bridge components that had created dangerous driving conditions and increased the risk of accidents along the busy expressway.
