The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), alongside his son, Abdulaziz Malami, on allegations bordering on terrorism and illegal possession of firearms.
The father and son were arraigned before the Federal High Court in Abuja on a five-count charge. The case, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/63/2026, accuses the former top government official of actions linked to terrorism financing and unlawful possession of weapons.
According to court documents, Malami is accused of knowingly aiding terrorism financing by allegedly refusing to prosecute suspected terrorism financiers whose case files were reportedly submitted to his office during his tenure as Attorney-General.
Malami and his son are also accused of unlawfully storing firearms and ammunition at their residence in Gesse Phase II Area, Birnin Kebbi Local Government Area of Kebbi State, without proper authorization.
The charges include alleged possession of a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, sixteen live Redstar AAA 5.20 cartridges, and twenty-seven expended cartridges. The offences are said to contravene provisions of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Firearms Act, 2004.
Both defendants pleaded not guilty when the charges were read in court.
Prosecuting counsel, Calistus Eze, urged the court to remand the defendants in DSS custody and set a date for trial.
Defence counsel, Shuaibu Aruwan (SAN), made an oral application for bail, arguing that the defendants had already spent over two weeks in DSS custody. However, the presiding judge, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, rejected the application, stating that bail requests must be formally filed before the court.
Justice Abdulmalik subsequently ordered that the defendants remain in DSS custody and adjourned the case until February 20 for the commencement of trial.
