Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian has ordered the start of nuclear negotiations with the United States, according to Iranian media reports on Monday. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump reiterated his warning that no agreement would be reached.
The Iranian news agency Fars reported that Pezeshkian authorized talks on Iran’s nuclear program following increasing diplomatic pressure and escalating tensions between the two countries. This information, citing a government source, was also published by the state-run newspaper “Iran” and the reform-oriented daily “Shargh.”
This decision came after President Trump warned of “grave consequences” should Iran fail to reach an agreement with Washington. At the same time, however, he expressed optimism regarding a diplomatic agreement.
According to regional sources, a meeting between representatives of both countries is expected in Turkey on Friday, following mediation efforts by Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, and Oman. US media reported that Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will meet with US envoy Steve Witkoff in Istanbul to discuss a possible nuclear agreement.
Trump has repeatedly warned that time is running out for Iran to curb its nuclear program. Western powers believe this program aims to develop nuclear weapons—an accusation Tehran has consistently denied.
In a recent interview, Araghchi stated that Iran and the United States share the common goal of preventing nuclear weapons. He added that lifting sanctions is a prerequisite for any agreement.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baqaei confirmed that Tehran is working on a negotiating framework, which is expected to be finalized in the coming days. Communication between the two sides is being conducted through regional mediators.
Turkey is playing a leading role in diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions. Araghchi is holding talks in Istanbul and is in contact with representatives from across the Middle East.
At the same time, Iranian officials warned that a US military intervention would trigger a broader regional conflict. They emphasized that while Tehran prioritizes diplomacy, it is prepared to respond decisively to any aggression.
