Super Eagles captain, Wilfred Ndidi, has lost his father, Sunday Ndidi, who died in a road accident on Tuesday.
The late Sunday Ndidi, a retired military officer, was reportedly involved in a traffic accident in Umunede, Delta State. He was rushed to a hospital in Agbor, where he was later confirmed dead.
Ndidi’s club side, Beşiktaş, confirmed the tragic incident in a statement issued on Tuesday, expressing deep sorrow over the loss.
The club extended its condolences to the Super Eagles midfielder, his family, and loved ones, while praying for the repose of the deceased’s soul.
The death comes months after Ndidi led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he also scored his first international goal for the Super Eagles.
During the tournament, Ndidi had dedicated his goal celebration in Nigeria’s group-stage match against Tunisia to his father, revealing that the gesture was inspired by his late father’s admiration for former Super Eagles captain, Kanu Nwankwo.
Reflecting on the celebration at the time, Ndidi said he was thinking about his father and decided to honour him in that moment.
The Super Eagles community and football fans across Nigeria have continued to send messages of condolence to the midfielder and his family.
