The Ondo state government has cordoned off the construction site of a two-story building that collapsed in the Adegbola district of Akure, the state capital.
The building, under construction, reportedly collapsed around 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, injuring several workers.
The Minister of Land Management and Urban Development, Sunday Olajide, ordered the immediate closure of the site during an inspection with ministry officials on Tuesday evening.
Mr. Olajide stated that the state government will immediately launch an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse and prevent similar incidents in the future. He warned contractors and property developers against using substandard building materials, emphasizing that such practices pose serious risks to human life and property.
He also urged developers to always obtain the necessary permits and approvals before starting construction and to strictly adhere to applicable building codes throughout the entire construction process.
The minister confirmed that no lives had been lost, but expressed concern about the injuries sustained by several workers. He added that, although the site had been cordoned off, further measures would be taken depending on the results of the investigation.
