The Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State has adjourned the trial of 46-year-old Adeniyi Kayode, the driver of a Lexus SUV involved in a road accident linked to heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua, which claimed the lives of two of his friends.
Kayode was arraigned on January 2 before Magistrate Olufunilayo Somefun on a four-count charge. The offences include dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 (as applicable in Ogun State); reckless and negligent driving, contrary to Section 6(1); driving without due care and attention resulting in bodily harm and damage to property, contrary to Section 7(1); and driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the Act.
At the hearing, the prosecuting counsel, Richard Nigiwe, informed the court that although the prosecution had four witnesses, only three were present. He requested an adjournment to enable the case file to be duplicated and forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General through the Department of Public Prosecutions for legal advice, in the interest of justice.
The defence counsel, Abiodun Olalekan, opposed the application, stating that the defence was ready to proceed with the trial.
In her ruling, Magistrate Somefun granted the prosecution’s request and adjourned the case to February 25, 2026, for further hearing.
