A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), sitting in Jabi, Abuja, has adjourned further hearing in the ₦550 million defamation suit filed by Senator Chris Anyanwu against a former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, to March 17.

The matter, which was scheduled to continue on Monday, could not proceed due to the absence of the presiding judge, Justice M. I. Sani, who was reported to be indisposed.

Senator Anyanwu instituted the suit over comments allegedly made by Ohakim during an interview published in the January 12 edition of The Nation newspaper, which she claims were defamatory.

In the suit, the claimant is seeking ₦550 million in damages and a public apology to be published in two national newspapers.

Initially listed as the second defendant, The Nation newspaper was struck out of the case after it issued a full retraction and public apology to Senator Anyanwu on June 1, 2025. Following the apology, the senator discontinued the action against the newspaper.

Monday’s adjournment marked the fourth time the case has been postponed since hearing commenced on October 13, 2025. Out of the five witnesses listed by the claimant, only one has so far begun testimony.

Reacting to the adjournment, Senator Anyanwu expressed concern for the judge’s health and voiced optimism that proceedings would continue expeditiously once the court resumes.
