Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assured residents that his administration will intensify efforts to strengthen the state’s security architecture to ensure the safety of lives and property across all parts of the state.

The governor gave the assurance on Thursday during the grand finale and wreath-laying ceremony marking the 2026 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, held at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Adamasingba, Ibadan.

Makinde expressed appreciation to officers and men of the Nigerian Armed Forces for their continued commitment to securing the state, urging them to remain steadfast despite prevailing security challenges.

He also disclosed plans to establish a welfare scheme for the families of five forest guards who were recently killed by gunmen at the Oloka axis of the Old Oyo National Park in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

“We are grateful to the officers and men of the Armed Forces who continue to give their best in these challenging times,” the governor said. “As a government, we will continue to provide the necessary support to ensure that Oyo State remains a safe and secure environment for everyone.”

Makinde noted that his administration would continue to support injured soldiers, widows, orphans, and other dependants of fallen heroes, stressing that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.

Referring to the recent attack on forest guards at the Old Oyo National Park, the governor said the state government sympathised with the affected families and would ensure they are adequately catered for.

“We will do our best to ensure that the families of those who paid the ultimate price are well looked after. This is not a time for blame. We will leave no stone unturned in securing every inch of land in Oyo State,” he assured.

Earlier, the interim Chairman of the Nigerian Legion in the state, Julius Alabi, commended both the Federal and Oyo State governments for improved welfare packages and support for legion members.

The ceremony featured the laying of wreaths at the remembrance cenotaph by Governor Makinde and other dignitaries, including representatives of the state legislature, judiciary, traditional institutions, security agencies, and widows of fallen heroes.

Other highlights of the event included a 21-gun salute, special prayers for fallen heroes, the release of ceremonial pigeons, and the inspection of the parade by the governor.

Top government officials, security chiefs, legionnaires, widows, and family members of fallen heroes were also in attendance.
