The Nigerian Army has warned the public about fake social media accounts falsely claiming to belong to the Chief of the Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.

In a statement released Friday in Abuja, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, said the Army has observed an increase in fake online accounts created by individuals impersonating the Chief of the General Staff for criminal purposes.

She clarified that the Chief of the General Staff does not have any official social media accounts. According to her statement, these fake accounts are being used to deceive the public, extort money, spread misinformation, and commit other fraudulent activities in the name of the Chief of the General Staff and the Nigerian Army.

Colonel Anele called on the public to be vigilant and urged them to avoid any interaction, response, or forwarding of content from these accounts. She warned that any request for money or assistance purportedly made in the name of the Chief of Staff of the Nigerian Army should be considered a scam.

She added that the Nigerian Army has taken steps to identify and apprehend those responsible for these fake accounts, with the aim of prosecuting them in accordance with applicable law.

The Army reaffirmed to the Nigerian people its unwavering commitment to protecting life and property and defending the country’s territorial integrity in accordance with the Constitution.
