The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Oduh.
The development followed a plenary session held on Thursday and presided over by the Speaker of the House, Martins Amaewhule.
During the session, the Majority Leader, Major Jack, formally read a notice of allegations and claims of gross misconduct levelled against Governor Fubara. He disclosed that the notice was endorsed by 26 members of the Assembly.
According to him, the lawmakers accused the governor of actions that allegedly contravene provisions of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
Speaker Amaewhule stated that the notice of impeachment would be served on Governor Fubara within the next seven days, in line with constitutional requirements.
Similarly, the Deputy Majority Leader, Linda Stewart, read a separate notice of allegations and claims of gross misconduct against the Deputy Governor, Ngozi Oduh, thereby formally initiating impeachment proceedings against her.
Further details are expected as the process unfolds.
