The Oyo State Police Command has alerted residents to a recent increase in cases of drowning across the state, urging the public to exercise heightened caution around water bodies.

In a statement issued on Thursday by the Command’s spokesperson, Ayanlade Olayinka, the police advised residents to be careful around rivers, streams, dams, swimming pools, and other water-related facilities to prevent avoidable accidents.

Olayinka specifically called on church owners and religious organisations, especially those with worship centres located near rivers, streams, or other natural water bodies, to take proactive safety measures during religious activities and ensure adequate supervision.

According to him, unsupervised access to nearby water bodies, particularly by children, should be strictly discouraged.

The police spokesperson also reminded hotel owners, resort operators, and managers of recreational facilities of their responsibility to ensure that swimming pools within their premises are properly supervised and clearly marked with visible safety notices.

“They are advised to employ trained instructors, lifeguards, and swimming tutors to guide users and prevent accidents and drowning. Essential safety and rescue equipment must also be readily available and functional at all times,” he said.

Olayinka further urged parents and guardians to be vigilant about the safety of their children, stressing that minors should not visit rivers, wells, or engage in swimming activities without responsible adult supervision.

He also advised owners and occupants of houses with wells to ensure that such wells are properly covered and securely lidded at all times.

“Where corrosion, damage, or structural defects are noticed on well covers or protective structures, such defects must be addressed immediately to prevent accidents. Access to well areas should also be restricted and securely locked when not in use,” he added.
