The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has condemned coordinated smear campaigns allegedly planned by certain politically motivated individuals and interest groups, describing the actions as part of attempts to undermine its ongoing investigations into the matter.

In a recent statement published in Abuja, the Commission’s probation officer, Dele Oyewale, stated that certain individuals were authorized to recruit paid agents to organize sponsored media attacks aimed at discrediting the EFCC and its directors.

He noted that the campaign against Commission President Ola Olukoyede and the institution, was condemned for improper political bias in the exercise of its legal responsibilities.

Oyewale explained that the aim of these attacks is to distract and intimidate the Commission, particularly to deter it from investigating opposition politicians for fear of being branded as biased.

He warned that such campaigns are likely to intensify as political activity increases in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.

“The Commission warns all those involved in this ruthless approach: their actions are being closely monitored,” he said, adding that the EFCC will not tolerate any attempt to divert it from its mission of promoting public accountability.

Oyewale reiterated that the Commission remains apolitical in all its activities and emphasized that political actors, whether from the governing party or the opposition, are not exempt from investigation or prosecution if convicted.

He pointed out that several prominent members of both the governing and opposition parties are currently on trial or under investigation by the Commission under the Act Establishing the EFCC.

The spokesperson also clarified that references to the presumption of innocence are consistent with constitutional provisions and should not be interpreted as a defense for individuals or groups.

He added that the EFCC maintains no alliances or working relationships with political parties and will not be pressured or blackmailed into disclosing information about investigations against politically exposed persons.

“The EFCC remains committed to delivering impartial justice within the scope of its mandate,” Oyewale stated.
