The Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday granted 1.5 billion naira bail to the immediate past Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN) and his wife, Hajia Bashir Asabe.
In a judgment delivered by the trial judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, the court admitted that Malami must pay bail of N1 billion naira while his wife was granted bail of N500 million. Each of the defendants must provide two sureties in the same amount.
Justice Nwite ruled that the sureties must be owners of properties in Asokoro, Maitama or Gwarinpa areas of the Federal Capital Territory. The court also ordered the production of valid title deeds for verification.
In addition, the defendants were ordered to surrender their international passports and were warned not to leave the country without prior court approval. Guarantors must provide two current passport photos and provide an affidavit.
The court also ordered that Malami and his wife remain in custody until all bail conditions are fully met.
Malami is on trial alongside his son Abdulaziz and his wife on a 16-count indictment involving alleged money laundering worth 8.7 billion naira. The prosecution accuses Hajia Bashir Asabe, an employee of Rahamaniyya Properties Limited, of being involved in laundering the proceeds of illegal activities through real estate transactions linked to the company.
Malami served as Attorney General of the Federation from November 11, 2015 to May 29, 2023 during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The case was adjourned until the trial begins on February 17.
