The Chairman of the Nigerian Revenue Service (NRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has dismissed allegations that the new federal tax system could be used to target political opponents or individuals for their political views.

Adedeji made the remarks in a television interview, where he said that fears of electoral fraud or politically motivated tax assessments were unfounded. He said the reforms were made to strengthen the country’s tax system and improve transparency, not to balance political interests.

He said the government’s decision to pursue major tax reforms, especially on the eve of elections, reflects a commitment to the long-term national interest rather than short-term political gains.

“It would have been easier to avoid difficult reforms at this stage, but we prioritize what is best for the country,” Adedeji asserted.

The NRS chairman explained that the reforms are aimed at addressing persistent weaknesses in tax administration, making the system more equitable, and creating a more transparent and predictable framework, encouraging compliance with tax obligations rather than fear.

He acknowledged that some of the skepticism surrounding the reforms stemmed from Nigeria’s past experiences with government agencies. However, he explained that the new framework is designed to limit discretion, rely more on rules and practice, and reduce the role of individuals in tax audits.

Adedeji added that strengthening trust between the government and taxpayers remains a top priority. He emphasized that this trust grows when citizens believe that tax policies are fair, equitable, and impartial.

He stated that the overall objective of the reforms is to consolidate public finances, support economic growth, and help citizens better understand the link between paying taxes and improving public services.

According to him, the reforms will be implemented in stages, prioritizing the establishment of a tax system that promotes investment, protects vulnerable groups, and guarantees the independence of the tax administration from any political interference.
