The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved its Kano State Executive Committee, along with all local government and ward-level leadership structures in the state.
The decision comes amid strong indications that Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, is preparing to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Oladipo Johnson, the NWC said the dissolution followed an emergency meeting and was carried out in line with the provisions of the NNPP constitution.
According to the statement, the party will soon constitute a caretaker committee to oversee NNPP affairs in Kano State pending further directives.
“The National Working Committee of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, after an emergency meeting, has announced the dissolution of its Executive Committees at the State, Local Government, and Ward levels in Kano State, in accordance with the party’s constitution,” Johnson said.
He added that caretaker committees would be appointed to manage the party’s affairs in the interim, noting that additional instructions would be communicated in due course.
The development is unfolding against the backdrop of an ongoing political rift between the NNPP’s National Leader and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Governor Yusuf. Reports indicate that Kwankwaso is strongly opposed to Yusuf’s alleged plan to defect to the APC.
Meanwhile, the Kano State chapter of the APC has confirmed that Governor Yusuf is expected to formally join the party within days.
The NNPP leadership, while dissolving the existing structures, expressed appreciation to all former party executives across the state, local government, and ward levels for their contributions to the party.
