Financial service provider Opay has debunked a viral social media message claiming it is giving ₦5,000 to users as a Christmas gift.
The message, which trended on X on Thursday, alleged that Opay had credited every user with ₦5,000 for the festive season. However, the fintech company described the claim as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday, Opay clarified that it is not running any cash giveaway or money distribution programme during the festive period and urged the public to remain vigilant.
The company warned users against transferring money to strangers or sharing sensitive personal information, including Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), noting that such messages are tactics used by scammers.
“Opay is not giving money to anyone during this festive season. Beware of scammers, do not transfer money to strangers, and never share your BVN with anyone,” the statement read.
Opay advised customers to rely only on official communication channels for verified information and to report suspicious messages to avoid falling victim to fraud.
