The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has confirmed a terrorist attack on its personnel stationed at the Wawa area of Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The State Commandant of the corps, Mr Suberu Siyaka-Aniviye, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing journalists in Minna, noting that no life was lost during the incident.
According to him, the attackers arrived in large numbers shortly after midnight but were unable to operate freely due to the alertness and swift response of NSCDC personnel on duty.
Siyaka-Aniviye explained that officers initially attempted to repel the attackers, but the situation became challenging due to the terrorists’ numerical advantage and poor visibility caused by darkness.
He said the attackers used torchlights to identify movement before opening fire, forcing the personnel to tactically manoeuvre and take cover.
“Our men manoeuvred and took cover, but the attackers fired sporadically because they had several weapons,” the commandant said.
During the exchange, the personnel abandoned their operational vehicle while seeking safety. The attackers, believing the officers were still inside, reportedly fired repeatedly at the vehicle, damaging the windscreen and puncturing all four tyres. The tyres were later replaced, and the vehicle was driven back to the NSCDC headquarters in Minna.
Siyaka-Aniviye further revealed that the attackers looted some personal belongings during the incident, including clothes, mobile phones, and other gadgets from nearby huts.
He also confirmed that one rifle was taken by the attackers while its owner was attempting to take cover.
The commandant stressed that no personnel were killed or seriously injured, although some sustained minor bruises while manoeuvring to safety.
He added that the Commandant-General of the NSCDC, Mr Ahmed Audi, has deployed a tactical team to Niger State to comb the area and reinforce security. The team remains on ground, with preliminary findings suggesting that the attackers were likely moving between hideouts.
Siyaka-Aniviye assured that all personnel involved in the incident have been accounted for and are safe.
