Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has said he is qualified to lead Nigeria, amid growing speculation about his possible presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor made the statement on Tuesday during a media interaction with select journalists in Ibadan, where he pointed to his experience in public service and the private sector as proof of his readiness for higher national responsibility.
According to Makinde, his tenure as governor places him on strong footing to seek the nation’s top office. He noted that by May 2027, he would have completed two full terms as governor of Oyo State, a credential he compared with those of past national leaders.
Makinde also highlighted his professional background, saying he successfully ran a private company at a young age and worked with major multinational oil firms, including Shell, ExxonMobil and Chevron, without relying on government patronage.
While affirming his qualifications, the governor said it was still too early to formally declare intentions regarding the 2027 presidential race.
He further stressed the need for a vibrant democracy with strong opposition parties, expressing concern over the increasing defections of governors and senior politicians to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Makinde warned that such political movements do not address the economic challenges facing Nigerians, questioning whether issues such as hunger and public discontent had also “defected” along with politicians.
