FRSC Intensifies Nationwide Enforcement to Curb Dangerous Driving During Festive Travel

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified nationwide enforcement to remove dangerous drivers and curb life-threatening practices on major highways as Nigerians embark on end-of-year travels.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, disclosed this on Monday during a strategic monitoring of vehicular movement in Kaduna as part of the ongoing Zero Tolerance special operation for the festive season.

Mohammed said the corps had deployed a large number of officers and logistics to major corridors linking Kaduna, Abuja and Lokoja in response to the heavy traffic recorded in recent days, particularly along the Abuja–Lokoja Road.

He explained that the monitoring exercise was also extended to the Abuja–Kaduna Road due to ongoing construction works, which could worsen congestion if not properly managed.

According to him, the Zero Tolerance operation is not limited to traffic control but is focused on identifying and removing drivers who pose serious risks to other road users.

“We are ensuring that drivers involved in speeding, driving under the influence, distracted driving and other dangerous behaviours are taken off the road so that responsible motorists and passengers can travel safely,” he said.

The FRSC boss noted that traffic volume was relatively low in the early hours but expected to increase as the day progressed, stressing the need for early deployment to prevent gridlock and accidents.

Mohammed expressed concern over widespread overloading, particularly the practice of mixed loading, where passengers are transported alongside goods on trucks. He said such practices would not be tolerated.

“We have observed cases of mixed loading on some routes. Passengers found on top of trucks are being disembarked and directed to continue their journeys in safer vehicles,” he said.

On nationwide enforcement, the Corps Marshal said all sector commanders had been directed to ensure early deployment to identified traffic hotspots throughout the festive period.

He added that regular and special marshals were already fully engaged across the country and that the operation would continue beyond the holidays and into January.

Mohammed urged motorists to drive with discipline, patience and respect for other road users, warning that the corps would not tolerate bullying, intimidation or reckless conduct on the highways.

“Anyone found engaging in such behaviour will be removed from the road to ensure free traffic flow and guarantee that Nigerians reach their destinations safely during the festive season,” he said.
