The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially unveiled the African Nations League, a new annual competition designed to showcase the continent’s top senior national teams and players.
CAF said the tournament will provide a consistent, world-class platform for African national teams, offering players greater exposure and more opportunities to display their talent on a continental stage.
Announcing the initiative on its official X handle on Monday, CAF stated that the African Nations League guarantees the hosting of a top-level senior national team competition every year, featuring the best African players.
According to the football governing body, the new competition is aimed at strengthening African football by promoting more competitive matches, enhancing player development and increasing fan engagement across the continent.
The annual format is expected to ensure regular high-level football for both players and supporters, while also creating sustainable opportunities for national teams and member associations.
CAF said the launch of the African Nations League underscores its commitment to raising the global profile of African football and improving the overall quality of competitions on the continent.
The announcement comes amid broader changes to the African football calendar, with CAF President Patrice Motsepe recently revealing plans to move the Africa Cup of Nations to a four-year cycle after the 2028 edition, ending the current biennial format.
