Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has reaffirmed his loyalty to the Peoples Democratic Party despite the leadership crisis facing the opposition party, dismissing speculations that he plans to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Makinde made the declaration on Wednesday in Abuja during the public presentation of a book titled Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments that Defined an Administration, authored by former Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.
Addressing a gathering of dignitaries from across the political divide, the governor made it clear that he has no intention of joining the APC or following other PDP governors who have defected to the ruling party.
“I am not APC, and I am not about to become APC,” Makinde said.
He stressed that Nigeria’s progress depends on sincere collaboration among leaders across party lines, noting that national development requires unity of purpose rather than partisan rivalry.
The governor blamed the country’s deepening political and social divisions on the ambitions of the political elite, rather than the wishes of ordinary citizens. According to him, most Nigerians desire peaceful coexistence and unity, but these aspirations are often manipulated along ethnic, religious and regional lines for personal political gains.
Makinde also criticised the “winner-takes-all” approach to politics, arguing that it breeds exclusion and weakens national cohesion. He called for deliberate efforts to design political and governance frameworks that promote fairness, inclusion and long-term stability in the country.
