Suspected gunmen on Monday night attacked a community in Ora Igbomina, Ifedayo Local Government Area of Osun State, abducting a former customs officer and killing one resident during their escape.
The attackers reportedly stormed the town at about 7:00 p.m. and headed straight to the residence of the former customs officer. It was gathered that the victim was returning home when the assailants, who were said to have laid an ambush around his house, seized him and whisked him away.
In the course of fleeing the area through nearby farmlands in the Akisa axis, the gunmen allegedly encountered a farmer who was working on his farm with a headlamp. The man was reportedly shot dead on the spot. His 10-year-old son, who was with him at the time, later ran back to the community to alert residents about the incident.
The traditional leadership of the town confirmed that security agencies had been informed and called for urgent intervention to prevent further attacks. Community leaders expressed concern over the security situation, noting that Ora Igbomina is located near boundary areas linking Osun to Ekiti and Kwara states, which they said has made the town vulnerable to criminal activities.
Following the incident, security operatives were deployed to the area to track down the perpetrators. Police authorities confirmed that they received a report of the kidnapping and immediately mobilised tactical teams to the community. Officers were said to have visited the residence of the abducted former customs officer as part of preliminary investigations.
The police disclosed that operatives, working alongside forest guards, vigilantes and local security personnel, are combing surrounding bushes and farmlands in an effort to rescue the victim and apprehend the suspects. Additional tactical units have also been deployed to strengthen security in the area.
While confirming the kidnapping, the police said investigations were ongoing, adding that efforts were being intensified to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and bring those responsible to justice. Residents of the community have appealed for increased security presence to safeguard lives and property and prevent a recurrence of such attacks.
