A former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, has died at the age of 71.

Justice Muhammad passed away at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, about two weeks before his 72nd birthday, which would have been on December 31. His death marks the end of a distinguished judicial career that spanned several decades at the highest levels of Nigeria’s legal system.

The late jurist served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 until his retirement, having risen through the ranks of the judiciary with a reputation for discipline, scholarship and dedication to the rule of law. During his tenure, he presided over the Supreme Court and played a central role in shaping key judicial decisions that influenced Nigeria’s legal and constitutional landscape.

Reacting to his passing, the Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students described his death as a profound loss to the country. The association said Justice Muhammad’s contributions to the judiciary, the legal profession and the nation would be remembered for generations.

The association noted that his demise was not only a loss to the Nigerian judiciary but also to the Muslim community and the country as a whole, acknowledging his lifelong commitment to justice, integrity and service.

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad is widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most respected jurists, whose legacy will endure through his judgments, mentorship and service to the nation.
