Nollywood actress Tonto Dikeh has shared a deeply personal account of what she described as a life-changing breakthrough from years of addiction, emotional struggles and inner turmoil, attributing her transformation to faith and sustained prayer.
The actress made the revelation while addressing a congregation during a recent worship and prayer programme, where she spoke candidly about her past and the journey that led to what she described as complete restoration. According to Dikeh, her struggles began at a very young age, revealing that she was introduced to smoking at just 13 years old and later became dependent on alcohol. She also spoke openly about long-standing personal battles that affected her peace of mind and emotional stability.
In an emotional testimony, Dikeh said these habits and struggles followed her for decades and resisted many personal efforts to overcome them. She explained that it was only through what she described as divine intervention that she was finally able to break free. Reflecting on her decision to speak publicly, the actress admitted that it was not easy to share such intimate details of her life, especially given her public profile.
She said she initially wrestled with fear about how her testimony might affect her image, but ultimately chose honesty and gratitude over silence. According to her, she realised that her public image was insignificant compared to the impact of sharing a testimony that could inspire and encourage others facing similar struggles.
Dikeh described a turning point in her life after participating in a major prayer gathering, which she said marked the end of years of what she referred to as spiritual captivity. She recounted experiencing a profound inner shift, explaining that long-standing afflictions she had battled since childhood suddenly lost their hold over her life. She described the moment as a decisive break from the past and the beginning of lasting freedom.
The actress also spoke about battling intense anger for much of her life, noting that it affected her relationships, career and general wellbeing. She said the anger was so overwhelming that it spilled into every area of her life, often hurting those around her. According to her, consistent prayer brought healing, replacing rage and bitterness with calmness and peace.
Dikeh noted that the sense of peace she now enjoys was entirely new to her, despite being 40 years old. She said that for the first time in her life, she feels genuinely at rest, emotionally stable and content. She described peace as the most valuable outcome of her transformation, adding that it had eluded her for decades.
She also reflected on the origins of her smoking habit, linking it to early exposure at home, and used her story to caution parents about the long-term impact of seemingly small behaviours on children. According to her, habits that appear harmless can shape a child’s future in ways parents may not immediately realise.
Dikeh further revealed that following her spiritual experience, her cravings for cigarettes and alcohol disappeared completely. She said her body no longer desired or responded to them, describing the change as total and irreversible. To her, this marked the final confirmation that the long-standing cycle of addiction had been broken.
The session concluded with prayers offered on her behalf, during which she was encouraged to embrace her story as a testimony meant to inspire others. The actress was described as a voice whose experience could bring hope to many people battling similar challenges.
Beyond the gathering, Dikeh later shared moments from the event on her social media platforms, describing herself as a living testimony of mercy, restoration and renewed purpose. She expressed gratitude for what she described as a second chance at life, stating that she now sees her journey not just as personal healing, but as a calling to encourage others to seek transformation and lasting peace.
