At least seven governorship aspirants of the All Progressives Congress in Osun State have withdrawn from the race after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday. The aspirants agreed to step down in favour of Bola Oyebamiji, who has now emerged as the party’s consensus candidate ahead of the forthcoming governorship primary.
The closed-door meeting, held at the Presidential Villa, was convened by President Tinubu to resolve internal tensions and streamline the party’s chances in the 2026 governorship election. Notably, the session was boycotted by Iyiola Omisore, who had earlier dismissed his disqualification from the primary as a joke, signalling his dissatisfaction with the party’s screening process.
Those who stepped down include former Deputy Governor Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke, Babatunde Haketer Oralusi, and Mulikat Abiola Jimoh. Their collective decision to rally behind Oyebamiji is seen as a major step toward party unity, as the APC seeks to present a formidable front in its bid to reclaim Osun State in the next election cycle.
