President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with several governors at the State House in Abuja amid rising security concerns and ongoing political realignments across the country.
Although the Presidency did not disclose the purpose of the meeting, it lasted nearly two hours inside the President’s office and drew attendance from governors across different geopolitical zones.
Governors present included Umar Namadi (Jigawa), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Biodun Oyebanji (Ekiti), Usman Ododo (Kogi), Aliyu Sokoto (Sokoto), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), and Nasir Idris (Kebbi). The governors declined to speak with reporters after the meeting, leaving the agenda undisclosed.
The meeting comes at a time Nigeria is grappling with escalating security challenges, especially in the North and parts of the South, as well as heightened political consultations ahead of key party activities.
Separate Meetings With Rivers, Ebonyi Governors
Earlier in the day, President Tinubu held separate private sessions with Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru.
Governor Fubara arrived at the Villa around 5:01 p.m. and departed roughly 45 minutes later. Details of his discussion with the President were not made public. His visit follows last week’s dramatic defection of 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly—loyal to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike—from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The mass defection has reshaped the political landscape in Rivers State, intensified speculation over Fubara’s future in the PDP, and sparked renewed uncertainty within the state legislature.
Only three lawmakers believed to be aligned with the governor remain in the PDP, and they have not resumed regular sitting since the lifting of emergency rule in September.
Governor Nwifuru, who also met with President Tinubu shortly before Fubara’s arrival, is known to be in frequent consultations with the Presidency on issues relating to infrastructure and security coordination in the Southeast. The agenda of his latest engagement was similarly undisclosed.
Growing Consultations Ahead of National Engagements
The series of private meetings with governors across party lines suggests intensified political consultations at the federal level, amid speculation about forthcoming national party decisions, regional security strategies, and internal political realignments.
As of press time, no official statement had been released regarding the outcomes of any of the meetings.
