The Anambra State Police Command has condemned the attack on a church in Lilu community, Ihiala Local Government Area, which left one person dead and several others injured.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday in Awka, noting that the assault occurred in the early hours of Sunday.
According to Ikenga, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the attack as “heinous and abominable,” stressing that it targeted innocent worshippers and violated fundamental values of peace, sanctity of life, and freedom of worship.
“This abominable act, committed against innocent worshippers, was not only an assault on the community but a grave affront to our shared values,” the Commissioner said.
He extended condolences to the families of the victims and the entire Lilu community, assuring that security operatives are committed to tracking down those responsible.
“Our community should not be subjected to such brutality. The command will not allow criminals to instill fear or destabilize the peace we are working tirelessly to maintain,” Orutugu added.
The Commissioner urged residents to stay calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid investigations.
He reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property in Ihiala and across Anambra State.
