The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has suspended several officers over their alleged involvement in unprofessional conduct with inmates at a custodial centre in Yobe State.

The suspension, which takes immediate effect, will remain in place pending the conclusion of a full-scale investigation ordered by authorities.

The Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, approved the disciplinary action after receiving a preliminary investigation report on the incident.

Tunji-Ojo stressed that misconduct within any agency under the Board would not be condoned, insisting that discipline and professionalism remain non-negotiable.

“The Service maintains a zero-tolerance policy for all forms of misconduct, negligence, rights violations, or inappropriate relationships between staff and inmates,” the Minister said.

He warned that any officer found culpable at the end of the investigation would face strict disciplinary measures and possible prosecution in line with extant public service regulations.

Controller-General of the NCoS, Sylvester Nwakuche, also assured the public of the Service’s commitment to upholding integrity, professionalism, and the rule of law.

“All correctional facilities nationwide will continue to operate in line with established laws, ethical standards, and operational procedures,” he said.

The development comes amid widespread reports that an Assistant Superintendent of Correctional Service (ASC II), Sani Saleh-Bodejo of the Yobe Command, allegedly raped and impregnated an inmate, Blessing Sunday. Saleh-Bodejo was also accused of sexually assaulting another female inmate.

The NCoS has vowed to ensure due process, promising that the ongoing investigation will be thorough and transparent.
